If you're looking to advance your career in clinical diagnostics and phlebotomy, the Medical Laboratory Technician - MLT - License in California offers an excellent pathway.

This license allows you to perform laboratory tests and moderate complexity testing, critical in clinical settings.

With an MLT license, you can conduct waived or moderate complexity tests under CLIA, report results, and perform phlebotomy.

You can perform blood smear reviews and microscopic urinalysis but are restricted from more complex immunohematology procedures.

To qualify, you need an Associate degree or 60 semester units in relevant sciences, such as chemistry, biology, and clinical lab science.

Specific coursework includes 36 units in physical or biological sciences, and 6 units each in chemistry and biology.

Military credits can be transferred via Community College of the Air Force or other approved military colleges.

Your official transcripts must be sent directly from your college to the Laboratory Field Services -LFS.

Non-U.S. transcripts require evaluation from LFS-approved services like NACES or AICE.

Ensure all your documents have your correct name and any necessary legal proof of name changes.

You must complete a 6-month clinical training program or have 3 years of work experience in a clinical lab within the past 5 years.

Experience should cover 480 hours in hematology, chemistry, microbiology, and immunology.

Military experience is accepted with proper documentation, including a DD-214 discharge document.

Pass an exam from approved certifying organizations like ASCP or AAB for MLT licensure.

Note that international ASCP certifications are not accepted; only U.S. certification qualifies.

After the exam, you must take a California quiz on state laboratory laws and regulations.

Your MLT license must be renewed every two years, and you’ll need to provide proof of continuing education and pay a renewal fee.

Keep up with training to ensure your license remains active and valid in California.

Visit the LFS website to apply online and submit the required documentation, including transcripts, training verification, and exam results.
