Welcome to Needle.Tube, Your Personal Lab Supply Assistant. Today, we'll briefly discuss How to Apply for a California Phlebotomist Certificate. Please keep in mind that information changes quickly. Don't forget to confirm the latest requirements and regulations in the official websites.
If you're working in clinical diagnostics and phlebotomy, obtaining a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I Certificate can expand your career opportunities in California.
This certification allows you to perform both skin puncture and venipuncture blood collection, essential for patient testing.
CPT I certification authorizes you to collect blood through venipuncture and skin puncture.
There are higher-level certifications like CPT II, which also allows arterial punctures, but CPT I focuses on core phlebotomy functions.
You’ll need to submit your high school diploma or an equivalent, such as a GED or college coursework.
If your education is from outside the U.S., ensure your transcripts are evaluated by NACES or AICE to verify their equivalency to U.S. standards.
Official transcripts must be mailed directly from your school to Laboratory Field Services - LFS, signed and sealed.
Make sure to upload legal proof if your name has changed.
Non-U.S. transcripts must undergo official evaluation, and the results should be sent directly to LFS.
If you have no phlebotomy experience or less than 40 hours, complete 40 hours of didactic training and 40 hours of clinical practice with 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures.
If you have more than 40 hours of experience, you’ll need 40 hours of clinical experience and additional training.
Applicants with over 1040 hours of experience need only 20 hours of advanced training.
You must pass a national certification exam from organizations like ASCP, AMT, or ACA to obtain your CPT I certificate.
If certified before the approved dates, you’ll need to retake the exam to qualify for licensure.
The CPT I certificate must be renewed every two years, with proof of continuing education and a renewal fee.
Keeping up with training ensures you remain compliant with California’s regulations.
Apply online through the LFS website, upload your training certificates, practical training verification, and national certification.
Ensure all documents are submitted to avoid delays; incomplete applications are considered abandoned, and a new fee will be required to reapply.
